Hammersmith and Fulham Council wanted to create a community complex that would maximize social benefits and minimize carbon emissions. As a result, the Sand Arts & Community Center was built in 2021 – a single-story building that combines bright, airy and flexible event spaces with a community cafe. Over 35% of the building materials are made from recycled materials, with a responsibly sourced CLT structure and the building’s brick skin made from upcycled landfill material. In addition, the CLT structure was designed to reduce ongoing maintenance requirements and to facilitate future adaptations.
