Block Materials focuses on bridging science and practice by making applications related to economics, law, IT and construction suitable for the circular economy. In particular, the use of Blockchain technology plays an important role. Block Materials has devised and described a methodology and uses blockchain technology to assign property rights to materials in real estate.
Overview of Possibilities with Cirdax :
CIRDAX is a real estate information system (digital materials database) that allows management of materials in every process of the real estate cycle. Based on actual data and smart techniques, it embeds circularity in the demolishment, construction and management phases of a building. Furthermore, it focusses on effective and efficient use of raw materials as well as the management and maintenance of the materials.
The CIRDAX software system consists of multiple practical tools and methodologies that are bundled together and can be applied to gain insights, encourage reuse of materials, trade materials, design with existing materials, analyse/report/visualise/measure results and to calculate CO2 impact.
The Overview of Possibilities documents provides a user or stakeholder with the differentent results that could be achieved with the use of Cirdax. It focuses on strategic goals in terms of circularity and costs and benefits for real estate.

Block Materials has been asked for its legal and economic knowledge in the field of cycles for materials in EU project COSTS to deliver an important contribution to the integrated and interdisciplinary approach of this four-year project on Circularity in Construction (Demolition and Life Extension of Buildings). https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA21103/

CIRDAX can be accessed through its digital desktop portal (URL: https://ddc-rumm.xl-cloudsolutions.nl/home.aspx#!) or the inventarisation App (iOS). The Cirdax Manual provides you with a step-by-step approach to use the basic functionalities of Cirdax. It focuses on daily use of the application.
With the help of the Manual Materials Database and Blockchain Integration you will be supported in conducting your own test regarding the integration of a Digital Materials Database, in this case Cirdax, with the Blockchain using verified Materials Passports.
A Materials Passport provide every material with an identity. The registration of this identity in the Blockchain ensures that it can also be irrefutably established that this identity of this material can be linked to an owner. Or that the requirements associated with a material can be linked to certain standards, for example in terms of quality or the standards for a production process. By linking a materials passport to the Blockchain, the information about this material is stored and can only be changed with a newly verified blockchain registration. So does the ownership of these materials, so that the blockchain registration also serves as proof of ownership. Proof that can be linked to other rights, such as Co2 rights, other material rights, etc. The Manual Materials Database and Blockchain Integration provides you with a step-by-step approach to use the basic functionalities of the Blockchain Module in Cirdax. It focuses on daily use of the application.
The basis of the Handbook lies in the daily experiences of the real estate owner – pilot owner about the quality of the various demolition processes of his or her real estate. And can therefore also be used frequently in the daily work of the property owner, as a reference for a new demolition plan to be made or adapted. The Handbook reflects the processes of the inventory of materials, decision making what to do with materials and the operational aspects of demolition, refurbishment, storage and selling or reusing the materials. This is done with detail to the processes and written down in associated documents, experiences, questions, and answers for each part of the process. A script for every sustainable demolition project.
In this book we look more closely at the design of the invisible hand, like described by Adam Smith, behind a circular and sustainable application in materials in and for buildings. A special role is assigned to the use of modern technologies and for blockchain technology. The book asks questions about the issue of circularity itself. But also why do so many materials disappear into the ground after years of service in a building? Why doesn’t it come full circle and why do we not reuse these materials? The toolbox used in the book contains among other the combination of law and economics. Tools that are rarely used in a burgeoning world of cradle-to-cradle, architecture, and real estate, because they are not tangible. Often too abstract to be able to apply directly, while the art of legal and institutional economics is correct, to build a path for everyone in such a way that the people involved automatically walk in the right direction of sustainable demolition. Read the book to see, how this can be done!
A social cost-benefit analysis provides building blocks for decision-making regarding demolition or dismantling (classic vs circular demolition) and answers the following questions:
The document provides the answers above and can be used as an analytical framework for decision making regarding classical or sustainable ways of demolition.
